Our Commitment to Justice and Peacemaking---Healing for the Life of the World

We witness our Franciscan spirituality by reverencing all creation, living and promoting peace and justice and respecting the dignity of all people.
--International Mission Statement, Hospital Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis

We affirm that our Franciscan Charism calls us to live the Gospel in the Spirit of Francis and Clare.  We attempt to live a contemplative stance with awareness of God in every person, object and event, caring for the earth and sharing with others.
---Provincial Chapter 2003

We are called to place high priority on….promoting attitudes and behaviors of non-violence.

We are called to give life to the world in a time of great global crisis.  The phenomenon of globalization means that all human beings share a global destiny on our one earth.  This shared destiny is both an opportunity and a risk for humanity as a whole and all its parts.  Our Franciscan values and the document from Vatican Council II, Gaudium et  Spes [The Church in the ModernWorld] contain the underlying principles for the decisions made at the General Chapter 2000.  Human life in the world is threatened and destroyed by poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, gender inequality, war, conflict and brokenness.
(To read Gaudium et Spes go to: http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_cons_19651207_gaudium-et-spes_en.html

Globalization challenges us:

  • to promote and work for human dignity and respect for all creation;
  • to raise those bowed down by their burdens and give courage to those in despair;
  • to be in solidarity with the entire human family;
  • to work from “top down and bottom up” to counteract the poverty that develops due to the dynamic of power and global economics.

We believe that all human beings are created in God’s image and the dignity of every person is rooted in the love of God.  As mature Franciscan women, our faith puts us at the service of those who are voiceless or powerless.  It calls us to reconcile without distinction as to ethnic origins, religion, sex or social position.  We are called in the spirit of the Gospel to search for ways of integrating those who are marginalized and to re-incarnate the all-embracing love of Christ.  Filled with hope, our Franciscan values lead us into the new millennium in the spirit of contemplation, poverty, prayer and humility.
---General Chapter 2000

We will reaffirm our common mission of healing and discern and support creative ways of meeting the needs of the poor, women, children and minorities.
